Jewelry Care

Fine jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed every day. With proper care and periodic maintenance, your jewelry will retain its beauty, structural integrity and brilliance for generations.

At the Robin Woolard atelier, every piece is handcrafted with longevity in mind. The following care recommendations will help preserve your jewelry over time.

Daily Wear

Fine jewelry should be treated with care during everyday activities. We recommend removing jewelry before:

  • Exercising or weight training

  • Gardening or household work

  • Swimming or using hot tubs

  • Sleeping when wearing delicate pieces

  • Traveling with loose jewelry in bags or luggage

Even durable gemstones such as diamonds can chip if struck at the right angle.

Platinum & Gold Care

Platinum naturally develops a soft patina over time, which many collectors appreciate as part of the metal’s character. Gold jewelry may gradually show light surface wear with regular use.

To maintain finish and polish:

  • Store pieces separately to avoid scratching

  • Clean gently with warm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush

  • Dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals

Professional polishing and refinishing are recommended periodically for frequently worn pieces.

Diamond Jewelry

Diamonds attract oils and residue that can reduce brilliance over time. Regular cleaning helps maintain maximum light performance.

We recommend:

  • Gentle cleaning at home with mild soap, warm water and a soft toothbrush

  • Avoiding toothpaste and harsh chemicals

  • Periodic professional inspection of prongs and settings

Colored Gemstone Care

Colored gemstones vary greatly in hardness and sensitivity.

Emeralds, Opals, Pearls, Turquoise, and certain Tourmalines require additional care and should be protected from:

  • Sudden temperature changes

  • Ultrasonic cleaning

  • Prolonged sunlight exposure

  • Harsh chemicals or solvents

If you are uncertain about the care requirements of a specific gemstone, we are always happy to advise.

Organic Gemstone Care

Organic and more delicate gemstones such as pearls, turquoise, opals, coral, amber, and certain softer stones require additional care and should always be the last thing you put on when getting ready.

Perfume, hairspray, lotions, cosmetics, and other beauty products can damage the surface and natural luster of these materials over time. We recommend applying all fragrances and hair products before wearing your jewelry and allowing them to dry completely beforehand.

To preserve their beauty:

  • Avoid direct contact with perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics

  • Remove jewelry before swimming, showering, or exercising

  • Store pieces separately in soft pouches

  • Avoid prolonged sunlight, heat, and dry environments

  • Never clean organic gemstones with ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals

Because many organic gemstones are naturally porous and softer than diamonds or sapphires, gentle care is essential to maintaining their appearance for generations.

Storage

Jewelry should be stored individually in soft pouches or lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching and unnecessary contact between pieces.

Chains should be clasped before storage to help prevent tangling.

Professional Cleaning & Inspection

We recommend professional cleaning and inspection at least once per year for frequently worn jewelry, especially engagement rings and diamond bands.

At the Robin Woolard atelier, we are pleased to offer complimentary cleaning and inspection services, including:

  • Stone and prong inspection

  • Professional cleaning

  • Basic wear assessment

  • Maintenance recommendations

Regular inspection helps prevent stone loss and extends the life of the piece.

Insurance & Appraisals

We strongly recommend insuring fine jewelry against loss, theft or damage. Updated appraisals are recommended every three years to reflect current market values.

Complimentary appraisal updates are available for existing clients.

Traveling With Jewelry

When traveling:

  • Carry jewelry in your personal bag, never checked luggage

  • Use individual travel pouches

  • Avoid leaving jewelry unattended in hotel rooms

  • Consider traveling with fewer high-value pieces when possible

A Lifetime of Care

Well-made jewelry is designed to accompany a lifetime of wear. Over time, every piece develops its own history through the person who wears it.

With thoughtful care and regular maintenance, fine jewelry can remain beautiful not only for decades, but for generations to come.
